We learned so much from each other this past week on #ParentCampChat talking about resources in our communities. Here are a few highlights:
- Amanada Reaka mentioned her school district uses Ready Rosie to help empower parents to teach at home through play.
- Dr Joe Hibbett mentioned his school employs a social worker to network families with community resources. He pointed out that there are numerous resources a regular school person just does not know about.
- Andria Jackson shared that her school has a Uniform Recycle program to help parents with the cost of uniforms.
- A number of people chimed in about how wonderful a resource their local libraries have become.
- Emily Howell has learned that value of making connections with local law enforcement and county mental health co-responders.
- Karen Cheser mentioned when she was a Principal, their school rehabbed an old Winnebago and took it out into the community during the summer. They gave away books, snacks, and did reading & math activities with the families. The KEY=meeting families where they are at! The visual image of her trying to back-up the Winnebago was quite entertaining.
- Julie Pile mentioned reaching out to local community service organizations such as Rotary or professional organizations such as the various career societies.
Overall we learned that there are many, many resources in our communities. One just needs to start asking who may be able to help and you may be surprised at the great partnerships and programs which can be developed for families.
